How to get Blitzkrieg 2 Anthology running today
- If the game will not start or crashes, set game.exe to Windows XP compatibility mode in its Properties and turn off 3D sound in the game options (Steam Discussions).
- If launching still fails, copy MSVCR120.dll from C:\Windows\System32 into the game's bin folder (Steam Discussions).
- For crashes during play, limit game.exe to CPU 0 and CPU 1 with Set Affinity in Task Manager's Details tab (Steam Discussions).
Synopsis
A World War II real-time tactics game in full 3D, built around fixed forces rather than base building or resource gathering. Across American, Soviet, German and other campaigns, players pick reinforcement types before each mission, then capture towns, escort convoys and break fortified lines with infantry, tanks, artillery and air support. The Anthology bundles the base game with the Fall of the Reich and Liberation expansions.
Reception
Critics in 2005 gave it solid marks, praising the 3D engine, destructible terrain, mission variety and the absence of resource management, while faulting weak pathfinding, limited camera zoom and frame drops in large battles. Later expansions drew the same pathfinding complaints and were called demanding for newcomers. Steam players now rate it Very Positive, largely out of nostalgia, though several recent reviews describe missions they could not beat and threads report the game failing to launch on current Windows.

Design today
2.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardUnits take poor routes, snag on obstacles and chase lone enemies, and groups detour through narrow spots, so orders often have to be given unit by unit. Source: worthplaying.com, gamesfirst.com, gameswelt.de.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensWidescreen resolutions work, but the menus are simply stretched to fit, leaving the 2005 interface distorted on modern displays. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressQuicksaves and named saves work at any moment in a mission, and players routinely save and reload to get through the hardest maps. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideSeveral missions are hard enough that players report being stuck for days and turn to forum advice or walkthrough videos, and reviews call the game demanding for beginners. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, gameswelt.de.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingWith no base building or resource gathering, missions move quickly from one objective to the next, and branching campaigns let players skip some missions. Source: worthplaying.com, gamesfirst.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe 3D camera rotates freely but cannot zoom out far enough to follow aircraft or wide fronts, and erratic unit movement adds to the fight with the view. Source: gamesfirst.com, worthplaying.com.
