Synopsis

Stronghold 2 is a castle-building strategy game set in medieval Europe that mixes economic management with real-time sieges. You grow a keep and its estate, keep peasants fed and happy to earn honor, and then raise troops to defend your walls or storm enemy castles. It offers a peaceful building campaign, a military campaign, siege battles and a free build mode.

Reception

Critics were split at release, with a PC Metascore of 63; many praised the layered economy, the castle building and the siege play, while others faulted the unit AI, long load times and thin guidance for newcomers. Reviews of the 2017 Steam Edition welcomed the widescreen support, better interface and restored multiplayer but noted the dated visuals and lingering pathfinding problems. On Steam it holds a Very Positive rating from about 5,200 reviews, with a loyal community that still plays it online.

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Keys cannot be remapped, and units often get stuck because of poor pathfinding, even in multiplayer. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, actugaming.net, warfarehistorynetwork.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The Steam Edition reworked the interface and supports widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions natively, though some important messages lack subtitles. Source: warfarehistorynetwork.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
The pause menu lets players save at any time under a file name of their choice and load from the main menu, though a multiplayer match that desyncs is lost unless the unofficial patch is installed. Source: store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A separate tutorial teaches the basics, the manual recommends it to newcomers, and the peaceful Sim Campaign covers the economy with few attacks, though some critics found the in-game guidance thin. Source: store.steampowered.com, actugaming.net, metacritic.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Players can follow either the peaceful or the military campaign, or play sieges and free build, so no mode forces grinding, though siege balance is uneven. Source: actugaming.net, warfarehistorynetwork.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The camera rotates and offers top-down and preset views, but its tight zoom-out limit has drawn complaints in several threads from 2017 to 2024, and only the unofficial patch eases it. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, github.com.
