How to get Xpand Rally running today
- Set a widescreen resolution by editing Data\VideoSettings.scr in the game folder (PCGamingWiki).
- Widescreen crops the view vertically, so raise the FOV in each car's Model.scr or use the widescreen fix linked from PCGamingWiki for other aspect ratios (PCGamingWiki).
- Cap the frame rate to a multiple of 50 FPS, since physics run at 50 Hz and jitter at other rates (PCGamingWiki).
- Map the controller in the in-game options menu to stop the car drifting to one side (Steam discussion).
Synopsis
A rally racing game from Techland in which you race the clock on point-to-point stages across several countries and changing weather. In career mode you start with a worn-out car, earn prize money from time trials and championships, and spend it on repairs, upgrades and better cars, with a choice between arcade and simulation handling.
Reception
Critics rated it well, praising the scenery, weather and lighting, the physics and detailed damage model, the replays and the bundled track editor, all at a budget price. Players today still rate it highly for its long, varied career and satisfying drifting once the handling clicks. The common complaints are a steep learning curve with no driving assists, front-wheel-drive cars that barely steer off the throttle, and limited controller support. Recent reviewers also mention the lack of native widescreen and jittery physics at high frame rates.

- Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)Steam states that the game's online features have not been supported since October 2024, leaving LAN play (Steam; PCGamingWiki).
- No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreenWidescreen, ultrawide and 4K need a config file edit and an FOV fix (PCGamingWiki).
- Full controller support or remappable controlsControllers and wheels with force feedback work, though the right stick is not recognized and some menus need the keyboard (PCGamingWiki).
- Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
- No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
- No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
- No known game-breaking bugs in the current versionPCGamingWiki lists no crashes, and recent players report it running well; launch failures appear only in isolated forum reports (PCGamingWiki; Steam).
Design today
1.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardFront-wheel-drive cars barely respond to steering without throttle, a frequent complaint, and the game lacks XInput, so controller triggers share one axis and the right stick is not recognized. The pause menu and profile loading still require the keyboard. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensThere is no widescreen option in the menus; widescreen requires editing a config file and gives a cropped vertical view. Changing graphics settings away from the defaults can make the game minimize itself. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressCareer progress is stored in a player profile between events, and a stage lasts up to about six minutes, so a crash costs only that race. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThere are no driving assists and a steep learning curve, and key rules go unexplained, such as only the top tier of each upgrade counting. Players rely on community guides to set up cars and spend money well. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe career spans many stage events across five locations, and one recent player finds it longer and more varied than expected, but another calls it repetitive and grindy, with races repeated to afford upgrades. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerPhysics update at 50 Hz without interpolation, so motion judders at common refresh rates, and widescreen crops the vertical view. Hitting checkpoint barriers can leave debris stuck over the windshield, blocking the view. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
