Synopsis

Arma: Cold War Assault is Bohemia Interactive's 2001 military simulator, first released as Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, set during a fictional 1985 conflict on Mediterranean islands. Players fight as an infantryman, tank commander, pilot and special forces operative across a long campaign where a single bullet can kill. The 2026 Remastered version keeps the original game intact while updating it for modern systems, with an open-source engine and native Linux support.

Reception

Operation Flashpoint was hailed in 2001 as a groundbreaking, open-ended military sim and built a lasting cult following that led to the Arma series. Players today praise its scale, challenging AI and atmosphere, while warning that the controls are clunky, flying is hard and the graphics are dated. The 2026 remaster, given free to existing owners alongside a GPL source code release, has been warmly received for preservation. Metacritic lists no critic reviews for the remaster yet.

Design today

2.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The keyboard layout is crowded and often illogical, and at the remaster's launch joystick and gamepad bindings were limited, with reworked gamepad controls promised for a later update. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The remaster supports widescreen and 4K natively, with borderless windowed mode, subtitles and separate volume sliders. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Campaign missions allow only a single save, deleted at the end of the mission, so a death often means replaying a long stretch. Extra saves need a cheat code or file workarounds. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Missions open with written briefings and little else, and players describe the controls and realistic, one-shot combat as hard to learn without reading the manual. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The campaign is a chain of story missions across infantry, armor and air roles, with no unlocks or grinding. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Driving and flying are clumsy, and players regularly crash vehicles into scenery or the ground. Source: steamcommunity.com.
