Synopsis

The match-three puzzle game that defined the genre: players swap neighboring gems on an eight by eight board to line up three or more of a color, which clears them and lets new gems fall in. Normal mode advances through levels until no moves remain, while Timed mode drains a bar that only bigger and faster matches can refill.

Reception

Bejeweled won Computer Gaming World's puzzle game of the year award for 2001 and spawned countless imitators, though Metacritic never gathered enough PC critic reviews for a Metascore. Steam players still rate it Very Positive and call it a relaxing classic that is easy to lose hours in. Criticism today centers on how thin it feels next to its own sequels, with only two modes, no special gems and outcomes that players say depend heavily on luck. Some also object to paying for a 640×480 game this old.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Both original modes are intact, and the game has no online features that could shut down (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
The only available resolution is 640×480, with no widescreen or ultrawide support (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controller support is not available; the game is played with the mouse (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no crashing or blocking issues, and the only fix it gives is optional, to enable the Steam overlay (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Every action is a mouse click on two neighboring gems, which works naturally with a mouse or touchpad; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, bejeweled.wiki.gg.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs only at 640×480, so in a window it appears as a small box that cannot be resized, and in fullscreen it is stretched from 4:3 on modern displays. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
A game in progress is saved on exit and resumes later, and high scores are recorded per player profile. Source: bejeweled.wiki.gg, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
On-screen instructions explain matching at the start of Normal mode, and a Hint button shows a valid move at a small point cost. Source: bejeweled.wiki.gg.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
With just two modes and no special gems or new mechanics, every level plays the same, and players note that runs end largely by luck once no moves remain. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, bejeweled.wiki.gg.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The whole board stays fixed on one screen, so there is no camera or movement to manage. Source: bejeweled.wiki.gg.
