How to get Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare running today
What you need
- Not needed Extra tools or mod managerBoth fixes are Windows and in-game settings; no mods or mod manager are needed.
Steps
Open a step for the full walkthrough.
-
If the game crashes before it starts on Windows 11, enable a recording device such as Microphone or Stereo Mix, even with no microphone plugged in (PCGamingWiki).
- Open the Start menu, search for Control Panel and open it. Then open Sound.
- Click the Recording tab.
- Right-click an empty spot in the list and tick Show Disabled Devices.
- Right-click Stereo Mix and choose Enable. If there is no Stereo Mix, as is common on Windows 11, enable Microphone instead. It does not matter whether a microphone is plugged in.
- Click OK and start the game again from Steam.
- If game sound is later replaced by microphone input, go back to the Recording tab and disable the input devices again.
-
If the mouse stutters or skips, lower the mouse polling rate to 125 or 250 Hz, or turn on Smooth Mouse in the settings (PCGamingWiki).
- Start the game and open its options menu.
- Find the Smooth Mouse setting in the mouse controls and turn it on.
- Play a little and check whether the camera now moves smoothly.
- If it still stutters, open your mouse maker's software and set the polling rate (sometimes called report rate) to 125 Hz or 250 Hz.
- Many gaming mice also have a button underneath that changes the polling rate; check the mouse's manual.
Synopsis
A first-person military shooter that moved the series from World War II to a fictional modern conflict, switching between a British SAS recruit and a US Marine across the Middle East and Russia. The campaign is a tightly scripted run of set pieces, and the multiplayer introduced the leveling and loadout systems later shooters copied.
What people say
Critics in 2007 praised its modern setting, cinematic set pieces, high production values and deep multiplayer, and it is still often ranked as the best game in the series. The main criticism at the time was a short, linear campaign, and some felt it refined the formula rather than reinventing it. Recent Steam players say the campaign still holds up well, with the brief length the only common complaint.
