How to get Carmageddon TDR 2000 running today

  1. If the game crashes when a mission or race starts, run TDR2000.exe with the -s parameter, open the Advanced Settings tab and set MIP filter to none (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If the advanced video options are cut off in the launcher, turn off high-DPI scaling for the game in Windows (PCGamingWiki).
  3. If the picture is cut off or the interface is tiny at high resolutions, players use the dgVoodoo2 wrapper set to the desktop resolution while keeping the game at 1920×1080 (Steam Community).

Synopsis

Carmageddon TDR 2000 is a vehicular combat racer in which you score by wrecking rivals, running down pedestrians or finishing the race, across ten open city and countryside areas. The campaign alternates free races with timed objective missions that unlock new cars and areas. This release includes the Nosebleed Pack with extra cars, locations and power-ups.

Reception

Critics were unimpressed, giving it a Metascore of 48: some liked the smarter traffic and familiar physics, but most disliked the frustrating timed missions, weak level design and poor frame rates. Steam players today are mostly positive, many out of nostalgia for its open levels, handling and old LAN matches. Recurring complaints are dull or confusing missions, tight time limits, unbalanced bonus cars, display trouble on modern Windows and the missing music in the Steam version.

Runs today

4/5
  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The official online multiplayer service has shut down, leaving only LAN play, and the Steam version ships without the licensed soundtrack, which the GOG version restores (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
PCGamingWiki lists widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
PCGamingWiki lists controller support with remapping, but not for XInput pads like Xbox controllers (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
The known crash when starting missions has a settings fix, and remaining Windows 11 reports concern display scaling rather than blocking crashes (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community).

Design today

2.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Keys are fully remappable, and players report an Xbox One pad drives well once bound by hand, though the menus still need the keyboard and PCGamingWiki lists no native XInput support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Menus scale badly on modern displays: players report a cut-off picture above 1366×768, a tiny interface at 4K and launcher options that do not fit their window. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There are no saves during a mission, so failing a late objective in a multi-part timed mission means restarting it from the beginning. Source: game-over.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Mission goals are vague and the floating guide arrows give little help, so critics noted players needing many retries or cheats to get through. Source: game-over.net, metacritic.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Every other level is a timed objective mission that must be cleared to progress, and players call these missions repetitive and say the clock leaves no room to explore. Source: steamcommunity.com, game-over.net.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Neither the critics nor the Steam threads single out the camera as a problem, and the physics let cars skid, roll and flip in plain view much as in Carmageddon 2. The field of view cannot be changed. Source: game-over.net, pcgamingwiki.com.
