Synopsis

Constructor is a city building strategy game in which you play a property developer racing up to three rivals to fill a town with houses, factories and tenants. You keep picky tenants happy with fences, gardens and room upgrades, then send gangsters, hippies, thieves and other undesirables to sabotage the competition. This 2017 remake keeps the content, voice acting and dark humor of the original with HD graphics and a zoomable view.

Reception

The 1997 original is remembered fondly, but the 2017 remake drew poor reviews, with TheSixthAxis scoring it 4 out of 10 for an awkward interface, fiddly work crew management and a missions mode missing at launch (added in April 2018). A German preview praised its gamepad controls and found the core loop still works. Steam players recall a rough launch that later patches fixed, and recent reviews are mostly positive about the humor and sabotage. Common complaints are rivals that ignore each other, constant council tasks, a hard to read interface and advice to buy Constructor Plus instead.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The remake keeps the original modes, adds online play, and gained its missions mode in an April 2018 update; its Denuvo protection was removed in November 2018 (PCGamingWiki).

  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Patches after the 2017 launch fixed the worst problems, and recent Steam reviews report the game running, though a small 2026 thread reports a crash after the loading screen on Windows 11 (Steam).

Design today

  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Steam lists full controller support, and a preview found gamepad play nearly as quick as mouse and keyboard thanks to smart shortcuts for repeated actions. Mouse and keyboard play works as in the original. Source: pcgames.de.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The screens are crowded with windows and submenus, and every building job needs a work crew sent there by hand, with no way to queue jobs. Players still call the micromanagement hard to follow. Source: thesixthaxis.com, pcgames.de, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
You can save manually at any time, and the April 2018 Get To Work update added autosaves at an adjustable interval, plus a key that triggers one on demand. Multiplayer matches still cannot be saved, so a dropped connection ends the game for everyone. Source: store.steampowered.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
A tutorial covers the basics, but the systems behind tenant demands, crews and undesirables stay opaque, and many players say the game is hard to understand without outside help. Tutorial hints also keep popping up in normal games until switched off in the options. Source: steamcommunity.com, thesixthaxis.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Each house needs its rooms upgraded one purchase at a time, tenant complaints repeat the same lines, and council tasks keep arriving. The loop turns repetitive well before a match ends. Source: thesixthaxis.com, pcgames.de, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The fixed isometric view scrolls across the map and the remake adds zoom, so the whole town stays easy to watch. Units carry out orders on their own. Source: pcgames.de.
