Synopsis

Counter-Strike: Source is Valve's 2004 rebuild of the original Counter-Strike on the Source engine. Two teams, terrorists and counter-terrorists, fight short rounds over bomb sites or hostages, buying weapons between rounds with money earned from the last one. It is played online on community servers or offline against bots.

Reception

Critics praised it at release for bringing the classic tactical shooter into a modern engine with physics and better visuals, and it holds a PC Metascore of 88. On Steam it remains Overwhelmingly Positive, and longtime players call it a more polished take on 1.6. The common complaint today is that many servers are mirror servers filled with bots, so finding a busy human server takes some searching.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Online play still runs on community servers and offline bots remain available; the 2024 Source engine update removed precompiled cubemaps, which can be rebuilt from the console (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Hor+ widescreen with native 21:9 and interface scaling at 4K (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Full key remapping; controller support exists but is partial (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no open issue that crashes the game or blocks play, only fixed texture problems (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard aiming is direct and every key can be remapped. A controller works but is not fully supported, which suits a game built around mouse aim. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen is Hor+ with native 21:9 support, and a February 2025 update made the interface scale properly at 4K. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
There is no campaign or progress to save; every match is a set of short rounds that can be joined or left at any time. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, esports.net.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The game has no tutorial or training mode. Controls, the buy menu and round objectives are explained by player-written guides, and offline bots with adjustable difficulty are the only practice. Source: esports.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Rounds last a few minutes and matches have no grind or unlocks; every weapon is bought with in-round money. Source: esports.net.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The first-person view defaults to a 90 degree field of view with Hor+ widescreen, and movement is precise and responsive. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
