Synopsis
Day of Defeat: Source is Valve's online team shooter set in the Second World War, with American and German squads fighting over capture points on European maps. Players pick one of six classes, from rifleman to sniper and machine gunner, and win by holding objectives as a team.
Reception
Critics in 2005 praised the remake's visuals, its weighty recoil and the way it rewards staying with your squad, while noting the small number of maps at launch; it holds a PC Metascore of 80. Later updates added more maps and modes. On Steam it sits at Very Positive, and recent players still call it a simple, satisfying classic with populated servers. Some returning fans of the original mod miss the British team and find the American weapons stronger.

4.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse and keyboard controls are fully remappable with options for sensitivity and mouse acceleration. A controller works with remapping, but full controller play is not supported. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe in-game HUD scales properly at high resolutions and a radar shows objectives and teammates, though some menus become small at 4K. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, worthplaying.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressMatches are short rounds on servers with no campaign or save system, so leaving costs nothing. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideThere is no tutorial and no offline bots in the base game, so new players learn the maps, classes and recoil against experienced humans; bots need a third-party server mod. Source: worthplaying.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMatches are team fights over control points with no unlocks or progression between them, and recent players still call it a simple classic that keeps a fair player base. Source: worthplaying.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerFirst-person movement is direct and widescreen is Hor+, though the field of view cannot be changed in the options. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
