How to get Dungeon Siege II running today
- If the mouse cursor is missing in the main menu, start the game with the Windowed launch option that Square Enix added to the Steam version, then maximize the window once in game (Steam Community).
- For fullscreen with a working cursor, use the hex-edited mouse cursor fix executable listed on PCGamingWiki; it can break camera panning in windowed mode.
- If saving fails, run the game as administrator or add it to your antivirus exceptions (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Dungeon Siege II is a party-based action role-playing game set in the world of Aranna, where a former mercenary joins the fight against the warlord Valdis. You build a party of up to six heroes, steer them through a long, linear campaign of dungeons and wilderness, and shape each character by the weapons and spells they use rather than by a fixed class.

Reception
Critics rated it well at release, with a PC Metascore of 80, praising its loot, party control and Jeremy Soule score while calling the clicking combat repetitive and the voice acting weak. Worthplaying noted spotty party pathfinding and a linear route despite the side quests. On Steam it holds a Mostly Positive rating from about 2,700 reviews. Players today still enjoy it as a comfortable loot game, but many complain that the Steam release lacks the Broken World expansion and multiplayer and needs tweaks to show the mouse cursor on modern Windows.

Design today
4.5/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe party is controlled with point-and-click mouse commands and remappable keys, with hotkeys for potions and orders; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, worthplaying.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensWidescreen needs modified interface files, and the menus and interface do not scale, so players turn to outside upscaling tools to make the UI readable at high resolutions. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game can be saved whenever you want and keeps all levels and loot, but each character has one save that is overwritten, a reload puts the party back at the nearest town teleporter, and death costs a walk back to the tombstone or a gold fee. Source: bellaonline.com, gameboomers.com, worthplaying.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressA short opening tutorial covers movement, combat and party commands before the campaign begins. Source: worthplaying.com, gameboomers.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingTeleporters across the map let the party return to town and back without long walks, and the 30 to 40 hour campaign follows a mostly linear route. Source: worthplaying.com.
- Camera and movement never fight the playerThe camera rotates and zooms around the party, but its tilt is limited so players see only a short way ahead, and several threads ask for mods to lower it; windowed panning can spin too fast with the fan cursor fix.
