How to get Gratuitous Space Battles running today

  1. To restore the Galactic Campaign, run the community-made local PHP server described in this Steam guide thread and point the game's server address to 127.0.0.1.
  2. If the game reports "Failed to initialise 3D Engine", delete the GratuitousSpaceBattles folder in Documents\My Games and relaunch (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

Gratuitous Space Battles is a 2D space strategy game from Positech Games in which players never control ships once a fight begins. They design fighters, frigates and cruisers from parts, place them on a deployment grid and set their orders, then watch the battle play out. Wins earn honor points that unlock new races, hulls and equipment.

Reception

Critics enjoyed its pure focus on planning and the spectacle of its battles, and it holds a Metascore of 72, though reviewers noted it is far from intuitive at first. Fans praise the depth of ship design and the custom campaigns. Others find the hands-off battles shallow and complain that spamming a single ship type beats careful fleet design. Recent Steam reviews are sharply negative because the online servers are gone, breaking the campaign while the game remains on sale.

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
All play happens through mouse-driven design, deployment and order screens, with no real-time input needed once a battle starts. Source: eurogamer.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports widescreen resolutions, and its ship designer, deployment grid and order sliders are laid out as clear menu screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, eurogamer.net.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Battles are short and self-contained, and honor points, unlocks, ship designs and campaign progress save automatically to the profile folder; there is no manual campaign save, and one player reported losing campaign progress when the game hung before a battle. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, eurogamer.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Short tutorials exist, but the game stays baffling for the first dozen or more battles, and players say it never explains what each race is good at. Source: eurogamer.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Progress relies on repeated trial and error, and with the servers gone the campaign throws the same preset enemy fleet at players in every battle. Source: eurogamer.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Battles are strictly two-dimensional and played out automatically, so the view only serves to watch the action. Source: eurogamer.net.
