Synopsis
An action role-playing game in the style of Diablo, set in Cairn, a grim Victorian-flavored world overrun by otherworldly invaders. Players build a character from two combined classes and a constellation-based skill system, then fight through hordes of monsters for loot across a long campaign and harder replays.
What people say
Critics praised the hours of satisfying combat and loot, the dark setting and the depth of character building, while some found it old-fashioned, with a forgettable story and clumsy menus. Players today still rank it among the best in the genre, often saying it only truly opens up on the higher difficulties, and it runs well even on modest hardware. Common complaints are a dated, small interface on high-resolution screens, thin in-game guidance that sends many to fan wikis, and a repetitive grind in the endgame.

Design today
3 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard is the native scheme; the later controller support handles combat well, but players find inventory, menus and skill assignment clumsy on a gamepad and on handhelds such as the Steam Deck. Source: steamcommunity.com, forums.crateentertainment.com.
✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The UI scale slider does not go high enough for 4K and the main and options menus do not scale at all, and a reviewer calls the in-game text tiny. Source: steamcommunity.com, thexboxhub.com.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Outside hardcore mode, death costs only some experience, most of which can be reclaimed where the character fell, plus the walk back; only hardcore characters are lost for good. Source: steamcommunity.com, forums.crateentertainment.com.
✗Hard to make progress without a guide
Tutorials are sparse, and leveling and character building are poorly explained in the game itself. Source: thexboxhub.com.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Replaying the same areas across difficulties and farming experience for devotion nodes feels repetitive, and some players describe the grind as leading to burnout. Source: gamepressure.com, steamcommunity.com.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The overhead camera follows the character and can be panned and zoomed, which a reviewer found more adjustable than Diablo 3's. Source: thexboxhub.com.
