How to get GTR 2 – FIA GT Racing Game running today

  1. If the game fails to start, run the graphics configuration again from the Steam launch menu (PCGamingWiki).
  2. For better performance on multi-core CPUs, set the affinity of GTR2.exe to all cores in Task Manager after each launch (PCGamingWiki).
  3. Optional: restore the removed Ferrari and Porsche content with the TnG Patcher or a hex edit of GTR2.exe, as described on PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

GTR 2 is a racing simulation built around the FIA GT Championship, with GT and NGT cars on real circuits. Players race single events, full championships and endurance races, tune their cars in the garage, and work through a driving school whose lessons unlock series. Three difficulty levels range from heavy assists to full simulation.

Reception

Critics at release ranked it among the best PC racing sims, praising its physics, sound and AI, while noting long loading, clunky menus and little change from the first GTR. Players today still recommend it highly, and some say its AI still feels closer to real drivers than in modern sims. The common caveats are that the Steam release lacks the Ferrari and Porsche cars, the official online servers are gone, and getting the best out of it means patches and mods. Gamepad players report twitchy steering that needs careful setup.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The official online servers have shut down, and the Steam release is missing the Ferrari and Porsche cars because of expired licenses (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen, ultrawide, multi-monitor and 4K resolutions are supported (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
Controllers work only through DirectInput, with no XInput support or full controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists only a startup issue fixed by reconfiguring graphics and a multi-core performance tweak, with no open crash (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
A racing wheel is the intended input, but the GamesFirst review found an Xbox 360 pad worked really well. The game reads controllers only through DirectInput, and gamepad steering can feel twitchy until the deadzone and steering rate are adjusted. Source: gamesfirst.com, pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The menus are clunky, with a confusing dashboard layout and unclear slider names. Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions are supported. Source: gamesfirst.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
A race weekend can be saved from the pause menu, even mid-race, and resumed with the Load Last Save button. The author of a popular fan plugin calls save and load buggy, and players report that AI drivers can behave oddly after loading a mid-race save. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A driving school introduces the cars, tracks and basics in a series of lessons, and three difficulty levels scale the assists from forgiving to full simulation. Source: gamesfirst.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Driving school lessons unlock championships, and an unlock button jumps straight to the event needed. There is no grind beyond the races themselves. Source: gamesfirst.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The field of view can be set in the game, and head tracking works through Tobii and Opentrack, so there is no camera to fight. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
