Synopsis

Guilty Gear X2 #Reload is a fast 2D fighting game from Arc System Works with hand-drawn anime sprites and a hard rock soundtrack. Over twenty characters, each with an unusual weapon and style, fight one-on-one using air dashes, double jumps and Roman Cancels. Modes include Arcade, Story, Mission, Survival, M.O.M. and local versus.

Reception

The Xbox version earned strong reviews in 2004, with a Metascore of 86, and critics singled out its deep combat, striking sprite art and music. Steam players still rate it highly and many call it a classic of 2D fighting games. The PC port draws steady criticism: it is locked to 640×480, controller setup goes through a separate launcher with numbered buttons, and online play needs a fan patch with a small player base. Several reviewers suggest the later Accent Core Plus R instead.

Runs today

4/5
  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Runs on Windows 11 without fan patches
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game never had official online play; local versus and all offline modes remain, and a fan netplay patch adds online matches (PCGamingWiki).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
The game is limited to 640×480 (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Controllers and key remapping are supported, but setup needs the mouse-driven config tool (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • No known game-breaking bugs in the current version
PCGamingWiki lists no crash or hang, though some players must unplug a controller to get past the title screen (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

3/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Controllers are read only through DirectInput and must be mapped in a separate launcher with numbered buttons, so Xbox and DualShock pads often go undetected or lose their triggers. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The game runs only at 640×480 with no widescreen option, so menus and text are stretched or boxed in on modern screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Matches last a few minutes, and the game keeps local save data that Steam Cloud syncs, so little progress can be lost. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
There is no tutorial for systems like Roman Cancels and Faultless Defense, and players note the game does little to ease newcomers in. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Fights are short and the many offline modes, from Arcade and Story to Mission and Survival, offer variety with no grind. Source: steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Fights are shown from a fixed side view on a single screen, so there is no camera to manage. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
