How to get Majesty 2 running today

  1. Cap the frame rate at 60 FPS or lower for Majesty2.exe in the graphics driver control panel, or turn on V-Sync at 60 Hz, since build speed and enemy spawn timing are tied to frame rate (Steam Community).
  2. Apply the 4GB Patch to Majesty2.exe to reduce out-of-memory crashes during long missions (Steam reviews).

Synopsis

Majesty 2: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim is a strategy game from Ino-Co in which the player rules a fantasy kingdom but never commands units directly. Players build guilds, temples and shops, recruit heroes who act on their own, and steer them by posting gold bounties to explore, attack monster lairs or defend buildings across a campaign of scenario missions.

Reception

Critics in 2009 found the hands-off hero system novel and the simulation rich, and the PC version holds a Metascore of 72, but some reviews argued that bribing heroes to respond to urgent threats makes a standard real-time strategy game frustrating. Steam players rate it Mixed. Fans still praise its humor and unusual premise, while many recent reviews say the game speed is tied to frame rate on modern hardware, so buildings go up slowly and enemies spawn fast unless the frame rate is capped. Frequent crashes and a few brutal missions are other common complaints.

The GameSpy online server browser has shut down, and some minor DLC can no longer be bought or activated (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen, ultrawide and multi-monitor are supported natively (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls

  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions

2.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Heroes can only be steered through gold bounties and often ignore urgent ones, keys cannot be remapped, and there is no controller support. Source: gamesradar.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The game supports widescreen, ultrawide and multi-monitor resolutions natively, with menus fully usable by mouse. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Saving is possible within missions, but players on the Steam release report frequent crashes while saving or loading, a lost save file and 15 to 30 minutes of lost progress per crash. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Mid-campaign missions such as the rat and dragon levels demand very specific build orders that players work out from forum posts after many failed attempts. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Sharp difficulty spikes and enemy waves force repeated restarts of long missions, and players call some feats close to impossible. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The overhead camera scrolls and zooms freely in fullscreen, though in windowed mode the uncaptured mouse interferes with edge scrolling. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
