How to get Men of War: Red Tide running today

  1. The Steam version plays without music; PCGamingWiki's fix is to replace RedTide.exe in the install folder with the GOG executable from the GOG music fix on ModDB, as described on PCGamingWiki.
  2. If the game fails to start on Windows 11, set RedTide.exe to Windows compatibility mode, which players report solves it (Steam Community).

Synopsis

Men of War: Red Tide is a standalone World War II real-time tactics game that follows the Soviet naval infantry known as the Black Coats along the Black Sea coast. Across more than twenty long missions you lead small squads, take direct control of single soldiers or vehicles, scavenge weapons and commandeer enemy guns and tanks.

Reception

Critics at release admired its realism, detailed vehicles and the satisfaction of cracking a hard position, but GamesRadar called the difficulty brutally uneven, faulted the missing tutorial and the shaky pathfinding, and regretted that multiplayer was dropped. Metacritic settled on a solid 77 for the PC version. Players today still rate it highly as one of the toughest entries in the series, praising its campaign and freedom, while recent reviews criticize weak AI, rushed storytelling and the music missing from the Steam version.

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
There is no controller support, and the mouse and keyboard scheme demands constant micromanagement of individual soldiers while units often ignore sound orders because of weak pathfinding. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamesradar.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The dense micromanagement interface comes with no tutorial or tips of any kind, and the game offers no windowed or borderless mode, only fullscreen. Source: gamesradar.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Quicksave and quickload work at any moment during a mission, and both critics and players lean on them constantly to retry hard sections. Source: gamesradar.com, bit-tech.net, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
The game has no tutorial or tips at all and drops players into missions that assume full knowledge of Men of War systems. Source: gamesradar.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Difficulty jumps wildly from mission to mission, with an early mission pitting eight men against a fortified village, and single missions take one to three hours with many sections replayed. Source: gamesradar.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Unit movement fights the player: soldiers wander into tactically unsound positions and struggle to get in and out of boats, which costs men in amphibious missions. Source: gamesradar.com.
