Synopsis
A real-time strategy game set in the Second World War, following American troops from the Normandy landings through the battle for France. You command small squads, tanks and support weapons, capture territory for resources and use cover and destructible buildings to win firefights. The campaign tells its story through cinematic cutscenes between missions.
What people say
Critics in 2006 hailed it as one of the best real-time strategy games ever made, praising its squad tactics, destructible battlefields and intense presentation. Players today still rate it highly and many prefer it to its sequels. Common criticism points at clumsy pathfinding, especially for tanks turning under fire, and at difficulty spikes in some campaign missions. Some players also report units ignoring orders until noticed.

Design today
4.5 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard command works the way modern strategy games do, with useful touches like setting where a unit faces on arrival. Source: m.hexus.net, stackup.org.
✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
It supports widescreen and 4K resolutions and its interface is considered easy to read; evidence on interface scaling is thin. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, stackup.org.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Campaign missions can be saved partway through; evidence on this point is thin because players rarely mention it. Source: steamcommunity.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A training mode teaches the controls before the campaign, though some missions spike in difficulty. Source: stackup.org, steamcommunity.com.
✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Missions are focused battles with no grind, although a few, like Hill 192, are seen as unfairly hard. Source: steamcommunity.com.
✗Camera or movement fights the player
Unit pathfinding is a widely shared complaint: tanks jostle and stall when turning under fire, and units sometimes sit idle instead of following orders. Source: m.hexus.net, steamcommunity.com.
