Synopsis
A real-time strategy game set on the Eastern Front of World War II. You command Soviet squads, tanks and artillery across scripted campaign missions, using cover, flanking and line of sight, while deep snow and freezing weather shape some battles. Skirmish, cooperative Theater of War missions and online multiplayer round it out.
What people say
Critics at release saw it as a polished refinement of the first game rather than a leap forward, praising the tactical depth, the winter battles and the Theater of War mode. They faulted a clichéd, heavily scripted campaign, unreliable unit AI and a battle interface that had barely changed. Players today still value the multiplayer, which keeps a small but steady audience, but many criticize clunky controls, inconsistent pathfinding, technical hiccups and paid factions and commanders that make the base game feel incomplete.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardSteam reviewers often call the controls clunky and note that keys cannot be rebound. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensCritics called the battle interface clunky and nearly unchanged from the 2006 original, and players still list interface flaws. Source: kotaku.com, vaporlens.app.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe main campaign lets you save during missions, though old saves cannot be overwritten; evidence on this point is thin. Source: kotaku.com.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe campaign introduces resources and building step by step and tutorials help, though mastering the systems takes time. Source: kotaku.com, vaporlens.app.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMissions are linear and scripted rather than padded, so there is little grind or filler. Source: pcworld.com.
- ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerUnits follow inconsistent paths and sometimes get stuck, so movement orders need constant babysitting. Source: vaporlens.app.
