Synopsis

An open-world crime action game set in Hong Kong, where undercover police officer Wei Shen infiltrates a Triad gang and struggles to keep his loyalties straight. You fight with fast martial-arts combat, chase and race through the city by car and on foot, and fill time with side jobs, street races and karaoke.

What people say

Critics treated the 2014 remaster as a good deal for newcomers, since it packs the well-liked original with its extra content and sharper visuals, but many found the upgrade modest and hard to justify for anyone who had finished the first release. Players today still praise the hand-to-hand combat, often compared with the Batman Arkham games, and the vivid Hong Kong setting, and say it runs well even on modest hardware. Common complaints are imprecise gunplay, stiff and odd car handling, awkward camera angles and an open world that can feel repetitive.

Design today: 3.5 / 5

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMelee fights run on timed strikes, counters and grapples in the style of the Batman Arkham games and are the most praised part of the game. Keyboard keys can be remapped and gamepads work out of the box, though gamepad buttons cannot be changed and some critics find the driving stiff. • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe HUD is a minimap that doubles as a GPS route to the chosen objective, with color-coded blips for story missions, cases, races and favors, and the full map lets the player set a waypoint in two keystrokes. Source: feralinteractive.com.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game autosaves periodically, and the player can also save manually from the pause menu at almost any time. Source: feralinteractive.com, gamecritics.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe story leads the player from one map marker to the next with an on-screen objective arrow and distance readout, and guns only arrive after several hours of melee, so each system gets room before the next one appears. Source: feralinteractive.com, pushsquare.com, mobilesyrup.com.
  • ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMost side missions are plain fights or fetch quests, collectibles are not shown on the map, and there is no free fast travel, only paid taxis, so finishing the side content turns into a slog. Source: gamingtrend.com, gamecritics.com, mobilesyrup.com.
  • ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerThe camera carried over from the 2012 release struggles to frame the action when reversing on foot or in a vehicle, and several reviewers list it among the game's main flaws. Source: tech-gaming.com, thesixthaxis.com, steamcommunity.com.
