How to get Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition running today
- If the frame rate collapses in the later Scarecrow sequence, lower the PhysX level in the game's launcher or set PhysXLevel lower in BmEngine.ini, as described on PCGamingWiki.
Synopsis
Batman brings the Joker back to Arkham Asylum, only for the inmates to take over the island in a trap the Joker planned. Players fight thugs with rhythmic counter-based brawling, pick off armed guards from the shadows, and explore the asylum with gadgets that open new paths.
What people say
Critics in 2009 called it the best superhero game yet, praising its combat, stealth rooms, atmosphere and voice cast. Players today still rate the FreeFlow combat and predator sections highly and say the game has aged better than most of its era. The common complaints are repetitive boss fights that lean on the same pattern, a weak final battle with the Joker, and dated textures and animation. On PC, some players report crashes, PhysX slowdowns and fiddly mouse and keyboard bindings.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 3.5 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardSteam reviewers often call the mouse and keyboard setup awkward, with clumsy gadget bindings and counters that feel unresponsive, so a controller is the safer choice. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensSubtitles become extremely small at resolutions above 1080p and the game offers no setting to enlarge them. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressFrequent automatic checkpoints mean little is lost after a defeat, and no source found complains about saving, though evidence is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressCombat and gadgets are introduced one at a time with on-screen prompts, and players rarely report needing a guide outside the optional Riddler challenges; evidence is thin. Source: demontattler.com.
- ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe main path is tight and linear with only light backtracking, though some slower stretches drag and the boss fights repeat the same idea. Source: demontattler.com, vaporlens.app.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe over-the-shoulder camera rarely draws complaints in reviews or retrospectives, though evidence on this point is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
