Synopsis

A dark puzzle platformer from Playdead, the studio behind Limbo, in which a nameless boy runs through a bleak, oppressive world. Players move him from left to right, solve physical puzzles and dodge guards and dogs, while the wordless story unfolds through what is seen along the way.

What people say

Critics in 2016 hailed it as a step up from Limbo, praising its unsettling atmosphere, inventive puzzles and memorable ending, and it became one of the best-reviewed games of its year. The main criticism at release was that some of its best ideas are used only briefly. Players today still praise the puzzles and the mood, and it runs well even on weak hardware and the Steam Deck. The most common complaint is that a run of three to four hours feels short for the full price, and a few players found some puzzles obscure.

Design today: 5 / 5

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardThe game uses only movement plus a jump and an action button, with full controller support, and players rarely complain about the controls. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, bostonglobe.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThere is no HUD or text during play and the menus are minimal, so nothing ages badly on modern screens, though evidence on this point is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressCritics note that checkpoints are generous, so frequent deaths only send the player back a few seconds. Source: bostonglobe.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressPuzzles are taught through the environment without words, and most players find them intuitive, although a minority wanted more guidance. Source: vaporlens.app, opencritic.com.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe short, linear journey has no grind or filler, and the only common complaint is that it ends too soon. Source: vaporlens.app, bostonglobe.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe side-on camera is fully scripted and players do not report it getting in the way, though few sources discuss it directly. Source: vaporlens.app.
