How to get Batman: Arkham City – Game of the Year Edition running today
- Install the open-source Advanced Launcher, which applies the DirectX 11 lighting fix automatically and can skip intro videos.
- Install the game on an SSD; on a hard drive, loading while traveling across the map causes heavy stutter.
- If the game crashes in the intro or entering the Iceberg Lounge, install PhysX or turn it off.
Synopsis
An open-world action game in which Batman is locked inside a walled-off slum of Gotham turned into a prison for the city's criminals. You glide and grapple across rooftops, fight crowds with rhythm-based combat, stalk armed guards from the shadows and take on side missions involving much of his rogues gallery.
What people say
Critics in 2011 ranked it among the best games of the year, praising its fluid combat, stealth sections, larger world and dense cast of villains. Reviewers also noted that the side content, especially hundreds of Riddler trophies, can feel like a chore and demands lots of trekking across the map. Players today largely say it has held up well, with combat that still feels responsive, though the PC version has a lighting bug and stutter on hard drives.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.
