How to get Batman: Arkham Knight running today

What you need

  • Optional Arkham Quixote DLL fixA replacement dxgi.dll that recycles texture memory and removes most traversal stutter. Separate downloads exist for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. Install the game on an SSD; on a hard drive it hitches heavily (PCGamingWiki).
    1. If the game is already on an SSD, skip this step.
    2. In Steam, open Settings > Storage and add a library folder on the SSD if none exists.
    3. Select the drive that holds the game, tick Batman: Arkham Knight, and click Move.
    4. Choose the SSD library and wait for Steam to finish moving the files.
  2. Turn off the Nvidia GameWorks effects in the graphics settings, starting with Interactive Smoke/Fog (PCGamingWiki).
    1. Start the game and open Options > Game Settings > Graphics (the graphics menu).
    2. Find the Nvidia GameWorks section.
    3. Turn off Interactive Smoke/Fog first; it is the most demanding effect.
    4. Turn off Interactive Paper Debris, Enhanced Rain and Enhanced Light Shafts as well if stutter remains, or if you plan to use the Quixote fix below.
    5. Apply the settings and drive or glide across the city to check.
  3. If the game still stutters, install the Arkham Quixote DLL fix by placing its dxgi.dll in the game's Binaries\Win64 folder.
    1. On the Arkham Quixote page, download the dxgi.dll for your graphics card, Nvidia or AMD.
    2. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
    3. Open Binaries, then Win64, the folder that contains BatmanAK.exe.
    4. Copy dxgi.dll into this folder.
    5. Make sure every GameWorks effect is off and close all overlays except the Steam overlay, such as MSI Afterburner; other overlays can crash the game with this fix.
    6. Start the game. If it crashes, the fix writes .dmp files next to the DLL; delete dxgi.dll to undo the fix.
  4. If stutter remains on Windows 10 or 11, turn off Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling while you play, as listed on PCGamingWiki.
    1. Open Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
    2. Open the default graphics settings and turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
    3. Restart the PC so the change takes effect.
    4. Turn the option back on after playing, since other games can run worse without it.

Synopsis

The final chapter of Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy sends Batman across an evacuated Gotham City to stop Scarecrow and a mysterious armored soldier called the Arkham Knight. You glide over rooftops, fight gangs with the series' rhythm-based combat, stalk armed thugs from the shadows and, for the first time, drive and fight in the Batmobile.

What people say

Critics on consoles rated it among the best action games of 2015, praising the combat, the detailed city and a story that digs into Batman's mind, while the most common complaint was how often the game forces the Batmobile tank battles on you. The PC version launched in such poor shape that it was briefly pulled from sale, which is why its PC Metascore sits far below the console scores. Players today still call the combat some of the best in the genre and say the port runs much better than it did, though stutter, a frame cap and Batmobile overuse remain the usual gripes, along with tedious Riddler puzzles and weak boss fights.

Design today

3 / 5
  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

On-foot combat and gliding are widely praised, but many players call the Batmobile controls clunky and dated, and the game leans on them heavily. Source: vaporlens.app, opencritic.com.

  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens

The HUD and menus work at 4K and in widescreen, and ultrawide works with some issues, mainly pillarboxed cutscenes that a community fix addresses. Xbox Series pads connected over Bluetooth can show PlayStation prompts. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost

There is no manual save. The game autosaves only after some cutscenes and mission transitions, so quitting mid-mission can cost a stretch of progress. Source: accelerated-ideas.com.

  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress

New gadgets and moves are introduced with on-screen prompts and practice, and players do not report needing a guide for the main story. Source: vaporlens.app.

  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking

Forced Batmobile sections break the flow, side missions repeat, and the full ending sits behind a large number of Riddler puzzles many players find tedious. Source: vaporlens.app, metacritic.com.

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

Gliding, grappling and the combat camera are generally described as smooth, with complaints aimed at the Batmobile handling rather than the camera. Source: vaporlens.app.
