Synopsis

An open-world stealth game in which the soldier Venom Snake rebuilds a private army after a long coma, taking jobs across Soviet-occupied Afghanistan and the Angola-Zaire border region. Each mission can be tackled in many ways, from silent infiltration to open assault, with gear, buddies and helicopter support. Between missions you grow Mother Base by recruiting soldiers and developing new equipment.

What people say

Critics gave it near-perfect scores, praising its flexible stealth, smooth controls and freedom to approach each mission your own way. The story drew more criticism for being thin, confusing and visibly unfinished in its second half. Players today still rank the moment-to-moment play among the best in the genre and note that the PC version runs well even on modest hardware. The most common complaints are empty open spaces, repeated missions in Chapter 2 and the grind of building Mother Base.
