Synopsis
A turn-based strategy game in which you guide a civilization from its first settlers to the space age. You found cities, research technologies, trade and negotiate with rival leaders, and wage war on a map of hexagonal tiles. Victory can come through conquest, science, culture or diplomacy.
What people say
Critics at release praised the cleaner interface, the hex grid and the rule of one military unit per tile, though longtime fans missed features like religion and espionage that later expansions brought back. Many players now count it, with both expansions, among the best games in the series. The most common complaint is the computer opponents, who declare war erratically and lean on bonuses instead of strategy. Players also report long, slow late-game turns and occasional crashes or launch problems.

Design today
3.5 / 5✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game plays entirely with the mouse and keyboard in a way players still find natural, and the map can be zoomed freely. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The interface does not scale with resolution and is quite small at 4K, and players report black borders at 1440p and 4K. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can save at any turn from the save menu, and up to 10 saves sync through Steam Cloud. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Players call the learning curve gradual and newcomer-friendly, and the in-game tutorials help both new players and series veterans. Source: vaporlens.app, thesixthaxis.com.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Matches run past ten hours, turn duration is a common concern, and late-game wars can drag on. Source: vaporlens.app, thesixthaxis.com.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The top-down hex map scrolls and zooms freely and does not get in the way, though the mouse can be off by about 15 pixels on Mac and Linux. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
