Synopsis
A turn-based strategy game in which you guide a civilization from its first settlement to the space age. You found cities, lay out districts across the map, research technologies, trade, negotiate with rival leaders and win through science, culture, religion, diplomacy or conquest.
What people say
Critics at release called it one of the most complete launches in the series, praising districts that spread cities across the map, leader agendas and a bright, readable art style. The main complaints were a weak computer opponent and a sense that it refined rather than reinvented the formula. Players still play it heavily, especially with the expansions, but a common grievance is that games are decided long before they end, leaving a slow, repetitive late game. Opinions on whether it beats Civilization V remain split.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.
