How to get Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic running today
What you need
- Optional KOTOR 1 Community Patch (K1CP)Fixes many bugs in the game. It installs with its own INSTALL.exe, so no mod manager is needed.
- Optional KMRP: KOTOR Modern Restoration PatchGives proper widescreen on modern monitors without extra widescreen mods.
- Optional NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD SoftwareCaps the frame rate at 60 if V-Sync alone does not. It comes with your graphics driver.
Steps
Open a step for the full walkthrough.
-
Cap the frame rate at 60 with V-Sync or a driver limit; above 60 FPS your character can get stuck after combat (PCGamingWiki).
- On a 60 Hz monitor, turn on V-Sync in the game's graphics options or in its launcher.
- On a faster monitor, set a 60 FPS limit for the game in your graphics driver. In the NVIDIA Control Panel: Manage 3D settings > Program Settings > Add the game > Max Frame Rate > 60 > Apply.
- If your character is already stuck, hold both mouse buttons, press quicksave, and keep holding until the save finishes.
-
Install the KOTOR 1 Community Patch for bug fixes, before any other mod (K1CP README).
- Download K1CP and extract it to a folder outside the game.
- Run INSTALL.exe.
- When asked for the game folder, find it in Steam: right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files, and copy that path.
- Install it before other mods, except mods that hard-overwrite 2DA, TLK or module files.
- To undo it, the README recommends a clean reinstall of the game.
-
For proper widescreen on today's monitors, install KMRP: KOTOR Modern Restoration Patch after your content mods (PCGamingWiki).
- Start the game once so its settings file exists, then close it.
- Run the KMRP installer and press Start Patching. There is no resolution to pick.
- KMRP backs up the executable, the INI and every Override file it changes.
- To undo it, or before changing resolution later, run it again and press Restore Original.
-
If the game lags or crashes after certain cutscenes, add Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 under Graphics Options in swkotor.ini (PCGamingWiki).
- In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
- Open swkotor.ini in Notepad.
- Find the [Graphics Options] section. If it has Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=0, change the 0 to 1.
- If the line is missing, add Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 at the end of that section. Spaces and capitals must match.
- Save the file. This does not lower image quality.
-
If movies crash the game, play in windowed mode (PCGamingWiki).
- In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files, and open swkotor.ini in Notepad.
- Set FullScreen to 0.
- Add AllowWindowedMode=1 under [Graphics Options] and save the file.
- In the game, press Alt+Enter to switch to windowed mode.
Synopsis
A Star Wars role-playing game set thousands of years before the films, during a war between the Jedi and the Sith. You build a character, gather a party of companions and travel between planets, making light or dark side choices in conversations and fighting in pausable, rules-driven combat.
What people say
Critics in 2003 hailed it as one of the best role-playing games and best Star Wars games ever made, with its story, companions and big twist singled out. Players and reviewers revisiting it now agree the writing and characters hold up best. The automated, dice-based combat and dated visuals have aged worst, and many say the opening planet of Taris is slow before the game opens up. Bugs from the original release are still present without community patches.

Design today
3 / 5✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The PC version has no native controller support, and the automated, dice-driven combat leaves players feeling uninvolved. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamecritics.com.
✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Only 4:3 resolutions are supported by default, and the HUD and menus are tiny or misaligned at modern resolutions without fan patches. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
You can save almost anywhere outside combat and Steam Cloud syncs the files, so little progress is lost. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Objectives are explained by your companions and the journal, and you can pause combat to learn the systems at your own speed. Source: gamecritics.com.
✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Players often describe the opening hours on Taris as slow and linear, with the best material coming much later. Source: steamcommunity.com.
✓Camera and movement never fight the player
The third-person camera follows the party without trouble. The one flaw is physics glitches above 60 frames per second, which a cap fixes. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
