How to get Jade Empire: Special Edition running today
- If the game stutters regardless of frame rate (common when the PC has been running for days or Fast Startup is on), install the stutter fix d3d9.dll from PCGamingWiki into the game folder.
- If the game cannot save, run it as administrator, as described on PCGamingWiki.
- If the configuration tool fails or reports that it cannot find Steam, run JadeEmpireConfig.exe in Windows Vista SP2 compatibility mode.
Synopsis
A BioWare action role-playing game set in a fantasy world drawn from Chinese myth and martial arts films. You play a student of a remote martial arts school who sets out to rescue a kidnapped master, gathering companions, learning fighting styles and magic, and making choices that push you toward one of two opposing philosophies.
What people say
Critics praised the original Xbox release and this PC edition for its unusual setting, strong writing, voice acting and companions, while calling the real-time combat shallow and the campaign short by BioWare standards. Players today still rate the story, world and morality system highly, and many place it close to the studio's best work of that era. The combat is the main sore point in recent reviews, described as sluggish and unresponsive, along with a widescreen interface that stretches and a fair amount of backtracking.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 2.5 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardA 2023 review finds combat sluggish and unresponsive on both mouse and keyboard and a gamepad. Source: klardendum.com.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMany interface elements stretch in widescreen and cutscenes keep heavy letterboxing; a patch is needed to keep menu text from shrinking at high resolutions. Source: klardendum.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game saves freely to manual slots outside combat. The Steam version has no cloud sync, so players moving between machines copy saves by hand. Source: vaporlens.app.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressPlayers describe a story-led adventure that explains its choices and systems, with no mention of needing a guide. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingPlayers name backtracking as the main downside, and healing often means walking back to shrines. Source: steamcommunity.com, klardendum.com.
- ✗Camera and movement never fight the playerReviewers describe the camera as poor and janky in combat, where fast ghost enemies drift out of range and the camera and sluggish controls work against the player. Source: vaporlens.app, klardendum.com.
