How to get System Shock 2 (1999) running today

What you need

  • Optional SS2ToolPatcher that sets up the latest NewDark engine, fixes various issues and prepares the game for mods.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. Start the game as it is first: the Steam version already includes the NewDark patch with widescreen and modern-system fixes (PCGamingWiki).
    1. Install System Shock 2 in Steam and click Play.
    2. Set your monitor's resolution in the game's options.
    3. If the game runs well, nothing else is needed.
  2. If the game crashes at random, or before adding mods, install SS2Tool as recommended by PCGamingWiki.
    1. Find the game folder: in Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
    2. Open the SS2Tool page and download the newest version.
    3. Save the downloaded file into the game folder.
    4. Run SS2Tool from there and follow its prompts to patch the game.
    5. Start the game from Steam. SS2Tool turns off the intro video by default; that shows the patch is active.
    6. Settings now live in cam_ext.cfg in the game folder. Open it with Notepad to change options such as fov.
    7. The systemshock.org guide warns that Steam updates can overwrite SS2Tool's changes. If the problems come back after an update, run SS2Tool again.

Synopsis

A first-person horror RPG in which a soldier wakes from cryosleep aboard the starship Von Braun to find the crew dead or twisted by a mysterious infection. Players explore the ship deck by deck, scavenge scarce ammunition, and build their character through combat, hacking and psychic skills while a voice on the radio guides them.

What people say

Critics in 1999 praised its atmosphere, sound design and blend of shooter and RPG, though it sold poorly at the time. It is now regarded as one of the most influential PC games, a direct ancestor of BioShock and the modern immersive sim. Player reviews still praise its tension and connected ship, but often criticize dated graphics, weak melee, respawning enemies, some needless backtracking and a weaker final stretch. Many players also find its mouse-driven inventory and interface awkward next to modern games.

Design today

2.5 / 5
  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Movement and aiming work with a mouse, but the Steam version lists no controller support, and the dated key layout, weapon swapping and drag-and-drop item use feel clumsy next to modern shooters. Source: store.steampowered.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

The inventory is a drag-and-drop grid at the top of the screen with small text, and the status panels sit in the corners, which reads poorly on large modern displays. Source: en.wikipedia.org.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

The player can save at any time and quick-save, with dying outside a Quantum Bio-Reconstruction Machine area sending the player back to the last save. Source: en.wikipedia.org.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

Character creation locks in stats and skills before play starts, and the many systems (hacking, repair, research, ammo types) are explained thinly, so many players lean on a guide to avoid a weak build. Source: en.wikipedia.org.

  • ✗Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking

Resources are scarce and the ship's decks require long trips between levels, with respawning enemies and backtracking for ammo and keys that slow the middle of the game. Source: en.wikipedia.org.

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

The first-person view is stable and supports leaning, and the NewDark engine patch in the Steam version gives smooth mouse look. Source: en.wikipedia.org.
