How to get Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut running today

  1. Install Luma, which fixes interface elements that do not scale at higher resolutions, restores the original gold color filter and repairs lighting; the lighter DXHRDC-GFX mod restores the filter only.
  2. If mouse look feels laggy, turn off V-Sync in the game's settings, as described on PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

A first-person action role-playing game set in 2027, when mechanical body augmentations divide society. You play Adam Jensen, a security chief rebuilt with implants after an attack on his employer, and you investigate the conspiracy behind it across Detroit, Shanghai and beyond. Most missions can be handled through stealth, hacking, talking or open combat, with upgrades that open new routes.

What people say

Critics at release praised the freedom to tackle missions in many ways, the stealth, the conversation battles and the cyberpunk art direction, while singling out the boss fights as clumsy fights that forced a combat approach. The Director's Cut reworked those fights and was well received, though players note it changed the lighting and color grading. Players today still recommend it for its stealth and level design, but many call the gunplay weak, the interface poorly scaled at high resolutions and the boss encounters the weakest part even in their revised form.

Playability today

Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

  • ✓Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse and keyboard and controller play both work. Mouse look can feel laggy with V-Sync on, which turning V-Sync off fixes. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMost HUD elements, such as the radar and health bar, appear very small at 4K and need a mod to fix, per PCGamingWiki. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressQuicksave, autosave and up to 99 manual saves are all available, so a failed stealth attempt costs little. Steam Cloud syncs saves. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressAn opening mission and on-screen hints introduce movement, cover, takedowns and augmentations, and no guide is needed to progress. Source: thexboxhub.com.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMissions let you spend time on side quests at your own pace, and the hub cities need only light backtracking. The Missing Link chapter sits mid-story, which interrupts the flow slightly. Source: thexboxhub.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe view switches between first person and a third-person cover view when you take cover or perform a takedown, and the switch is smooth. The default field of view goes up to 100 degrees. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, thexboxhub.com.
