Synopsis

Tomb Raider is a third-person action adventure that reboots the series with a young Lara Croft shipwrecked on a stormy island off the coast of Japan. You climb, hunt and fight your way across a semi-open island, upgrading gear at campfires, scavenging for salvage and tackling optional tombs, while the story follows Lara's first fight for survival.

What people say

Critics in 2013 praised its looks, its atmosphere and the new, more vulnerable Lara, and the PC version was among the best-looking games of its year. The most common criticism, then and now, is its many quick-time events, some of them unforgiving and poorly signaled. Retrospectives also note that the optional tombs are short and simple, that the first half leans heavily on cutscenes and the second on gunfights, and that the game borrows a lot from Uncharted. Many players still find it a tight, well-paced action game that does not overstay its welcome.

Design today

4.5 / 5
  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Regular movement and shooting work well, but frequent quick-time events with tiny timing windows cause repeated instant deaths. Source: denofgeek.com, thumbsticks.com.

  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens

The HUD is minimal, with a placeable waypoint instead of a minimap, and critics raised no readability complaints. Source: denofgeek.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

The game checkpoints automatically at frequent points, and campfires double as fast travel stops, so a death costs only a short stretch of play. Source: denofgeek.com, en.wikipedia.org).

  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress

The island's layout and the Survival Instinct highlight keep players on track without a guide. Source: thumbsticks.com.

  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking

The campaign is compact with little backtracking, though the opening hours are heavy on cutscenes. Source: thumbsticks.com, denofgeek.com.

  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the player

A modern over-the-shoulder camera follows the fluid climbing and cover movement, and reviews raise no camera complaints. Source: thumbsticks.com, en.wikipedia.org).
