How to get Max Payne 3 running today
- If the game does not start from Steam after a Rockstar launcher update, run PlayMaxPayne3.exe from the game folder instead (PCGamingWiki).
- Install Fusion Fix by extracting its latest release into the game folder; it fixes crashes and random pausing, adds borderless windowed mode and correct gamepad prompts.
Synopsis
A third-person shooter from Rockstar in which a worn-out, drinking Max Payne takes a private security job in São Paulo and is pulled into a kidnapping and a web of corruption. You fight through linear levels with cover, slow-motion bullet time and acrobatic shoot-dodges, between long story scenes narrated by Max.
What people say
Critics praised its polished gunplay, physics-driven animation, presentation and soundtrack, and many called it a worthy if very different follow-up to Remedy's games; the main criticisms were repetition and a rigid formula. Players today still single out the shooting as some of the best in the genre, along with James McCaffrey's performance as Max. Common complaints are frequent, often unskippable cutscenes that break up play, a story some find weaker than the earlier games, strictly linear levels, and weighty movement that can make Max stumble.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.
