How to get Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition running today

What you need

  • Optional Deus Ex Community UpdateOne installer that bundles every known unofficial patch, alternate exe and renderer, including Deus Exe, Transcended, Confix and Unofficial Patch v2.
  • Not needed Deus Exe launcherA replacement executable that adds widescreen support, GUI scaling and launching without the Steam client. Not needed if the Community Update is installed.
  • Optional Kentie's Direct3D 10 rendererA modern renderer with better compatibility, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering and multi-monitor resolutions.
  • Optional Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x86 RedistributableRequired by Deus Exe.

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. For the simplest route, install the Deus Ex Community Update, which bundles the unofficial patches, alternate executables and modern renderers in one installer.
    1. Open the Community Update releases page.
    2. Under the latest release, download the installer .exe from the Assets list.
    3. In Steam, right-click Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition > Manage > Browse local files, and note the folder path.
    4. Run the installer and follow its prompts, choosing the game folder as the install location.
    5. Start the game from Steam. No mod manager is needed.
  2. Or, instead of the Community Update, install Kentie's Deus Exe launcher together with the Direct3D 10 renderer for widescreen resolutions and better compatibility.
    1. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 x86 Redistributable if it is not already installed.
    2. Download the latest Deus Exe zip from the Deus Exe downloads section.
    3. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files, and open the System folder.
    4. Extract the Deus Exe files into System and replace deusex.exe when asked.
    5. Download the latest Direct3D 10 renderer and extract it into the same System folder, so d3d10drv.dll and a d3d10drv subfolder appear there.
    6. Start the game and select the Direct3D 10 renderer in the Deus Exe launcher. With the stock exe, open the video options, click the renderer button, tick Show all devices and pick Direct3D 10.
    7. If the screen goes black after Alt+Tab in fullscreen, enable Precache in the renderer's settings.
    8. On Nvidia driver 442 or newer, if the game stutters, set FPSLimit to 0 and cap the frame rate at 120 or lower in the Nvidia Control Panel under Manage 3D settings > Program Settings > Max Frame Rate.
  3. In Deus Exe, adjust the GUI scaling option so menus and text are readable at high resolutions.
    1. Start the game so the Deus Exe launcher opens.
    2. Find the GUI scaling option in the launcher settings and raise or lower it until menus and text are a comfortable size.
    3. Start the game and check the main menu and the inventory screen.
    4. If the GUI is still too small or too big at resolutions such as 1366×768, use Peixoto's patch or the OTP UI Fix instead.

Synopsis

A first-person role-playing game set in a near-future world of plagues, terrorism and secret societies, where nano-augmented agent JC Denton uncovers a conspiracy. Each mission can be tackled through combat, stealth, hacking or conversation, and open levels hide vents, side routes and optional objectives. You spend skill points and augmentations to shape how JC plays.

What people say

Critics in 2000 hailed it as a landmark for letting players solve problems in many ways, and it still tops lists of the best PC games. Players today praise its branching level design and prescient story. Many newcomers struggle with stiff gunplay, aim that depends on skill points, rough animations and a steep opening. On modern Windows it usually needs community patches to launch and display correctly.

Design today

  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

Players call the gunplay stiff and clunky: aim wanders until weapon skills rise, and augmentations sit on awkward function keys. Source: vaporlens.app, steamcommunity.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

Without community patches the interface does not scale to modern resolutions and widescreen support is limited. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

You can quicksave anywhere, though players note that stealth and combat often lean on saving before every encounter. Source: steamcommunity.com.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

Despite a training mission, players describe a steep learning curve that overwhelms newcomers in the first hours. Source: vaporlens.app.

  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking

Open missions offer many routes without grind, though some players find the middle stretch janky and slow. Source: steamcommunity.com, vaporlens.app.

  • ✗Camera or movement fights the player

Widescreen output is zoomed in, which crops the view and hides part of the main menu logo, until the Deus Exe launcher or the Direct3D 10 renderer adjusts the field of view. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
