How to get Daikatana running today
- Install the unofficial 1.3 patch, which adds widescreen resolutions, an option to turn off mouse acceleration, an option to disable the AI sidekicks and many bug fixes (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
A first-person shooter from John Romero in which swordsmaster Hiro Miyamoto uses a time-traveling sword to chase a villain through future Japan, ancient Greece, Dark Age Norway and near-future San Francisco. Two computer-controlled sidekicks travel with you, and weapons and character stats level up as you fight.
What people say
After years of hype, the 2000 release was panned for dated graphics, repetitive sound, a weak first episode and buggy sidekicks that became the game's best-known flaw, and it was a commercial failure. Some critics still singled out the Greece episode as a highlight. Steam players today are mixed: many enjoy its creative weapons and call it an acquired taste, but most criticize cramped level design and frustrating companions, and they strongly recommend the fan-made 1.3 patch.
Playability today
Playability runs from 1 to 5. It is the average of two parts. Each part starts at 1 and climbs to 5 as more of its checks pass. Read the method.

Design today: 2.5 / 5
- ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMovement is very fast and slippery for some players, and turning off mouse acceleration takes the fan patch. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✗Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensThe unpatched game lacks widescreen support, which only the fan-made 1.3 patch adds. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- ✗Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe original release limits saves, which players say does not suit the game, and unlimited saving is an option they credit with making it manageable. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressAs a straightforward shooter it needs little explanation, and no complaints about getting lost turned up, though evidence is thin. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- ✗Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingCritics then and players now call the first episode a slog of cramped corridors, unfair encounters and sidekicks that get stuck and slow progress. Source: en.wikipedia.org, steamcommunity.com.
- ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe first-person camera itself draws no complaints, though tight vents and fast movement make some platforming awkward, and evidence is thin. Source: steamcommunity.com.
