How to get XCOM: Enemy Unknown running today

  1. If the screen flashes white during play on a modern graphics card, raise the Fog of War setting first.
  2. If the flashing continues, run the game through a wrapper such as dgVoodoo 2 or DXVK.

Synopsis

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactics game about defending Earth from an alien invasion. You lead small squads of soldiers through grid-based missions where cover and positioning decide everything, then return to an underground base to research alien technology, build facilities and keep the world's nations from abandoning the project.

What people say

Critics in 2012 praised it as a bold, accessible revival of the 1994 classic, with tense permadeath battles and a satisfying strategic layer. Players still say it holds up, and the Enemy Within expansion is widely recommended as the best way to play. Common criticisms are punishing randomness, where high-percentage shots miss and squads collapse, a fiddly cursor when picking tiles on rooftops, and crashes or corrupted autosaves that make manual saves advisable.

  • ✗Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardPicking a rooftop or upper-floor tile is fiddly because the cursor keeps snapping to the level below, a complaint retrospectives still raise. Source: yahoo.com.
  • ✓Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screensMenus and the base screens are clear at 16:9, though ultrawide monitors are not supported and there are no hit-chance previews like in XCOM 2. Source: vaporlens.app, yahoo.com.
  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressFree saving outside the optional Ironman mode, though players advise manual saves because autosaves are sometimes corrupted. Source: vaporlens.app.
  • ✓It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressA guided opening campaign introduces cover, classes and the base, and players call the game approachable; evidence is thin. Source: vaporlens.app.
  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe loop of missions, research and soldier growth stays brisk, though late-game extras can feel crowded. Source: yahoo.com.
  • ✓Camera and movement never fight the playerThe tactical camera and its cinematic swoops are still singled out as a strength. Source: yahoo.com.
