How to get Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance running today

What you need

Steps

Open a step for the full walkthrough.

  1. Install the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance PC Fix by Steam006 for custom resolutions, a corrected frame rate cap and a fixed save path, which also stops crashes on systems without a C: drive.
    1. Open the PC Fix page and click Download.
    2. Find the game folder: in Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files. It contains METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE.exe.
    3. Before copying, make a backup of any file in the game folder that has the same name as a file in the download.
    4. Copy Metal_Gear_Rising_Revengeance_PCFix.dll, Metal_Gear_Rising_Revengeance_PCFix.ini and the loader DLL that comes with them into the game folder, and confirm when Windows asks to replace a file.
    5. Open Metal_Gear_Rising_Revengeance_PCFix.ini with Notepad. Set your resolution and, if you like, turn on SkipLogos and set DisableNoiseFilter to 1.
    6. Save the file and start the game. The logo videos are skipped if SkipLogos is on, which shows the fix is working.
  2. If the game runs at the wrong refresh rate, turn off fullscreen optimizations for the game's EXE (PCGamingWiki).
    1. In Steam, right-click the game > Manage > Browse local files.
    2. Right-click METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE.exe and click Properties.
    3. Open the Compatibility tab.
    4. Tick Disable fullscreen optimizations.
    5. Click Apply and OK, then start the game.
  3. For low cutscene volume, turn off Spatial Sound in the Windows sound settings (PCGamingWiki).
    1. Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose Sound settings.
    2. Under Output, click your speakers or headphones.
    3. Find Spatial audio and set it to Off.
    4. Start the game and check the volume in a cutscene.

Synopsis

A fast action game from PlatinumGames set in the Metal Gear universe, starring the cyborg ninja Raiden. Players slash through soldiers and giant machines with a sword that can cut enemies apart along any angle, and blocking comes from a timed parry instead of a guard button.

What people say

Critics in 2013 and on PC in 2014 praised the speed and spectacle of the sword fighting, the boss battles and the loud metal soundtrack, while some reviews called the combat repetitive and named the camera its worst flaw. The story and its over-the-top villains were divisive at release but have since become a big part of its cult following. Players today still rate the parry-and-cut combat highly and like that it is short, but many complain about the camera, a poorly explained parry and a bare-bones PC port.

Design today

2.5 / 5
  • ✗Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard

It plays well on a controller, but players widely call mouse and keyboard awkward because the camera emulates a stick with negative mouse acceleration. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✗Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens

The unmodded PC version is capped at 1080p, and players report fullscreen and display problems that often need mods. Source: vaporlens.app, pcgamingwiki.com.

  • ✓Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress

Checkpoints arrive every few minutes inside a chapter and the game saves between chapters, so a death costs little progress. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, vaporlens.app.

  • ✗Hard to make progress without a guide

The tutorial explains parrying and lock-on poorly (the parry is a top complaint), so many players lean on the VR missions or outside help. Source: vaporlens.app, worthplaying.com.

  • ✓Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking

The campaign is short, with no grind or backtracking, though the opening is heavy on cutscenes and a few bosses run long. Source: vaporlens.app.

  • ✗Camera or movement fights the player

The camera is the most common complaint, drifting from enemies, catching on walls and making parries harder in crowded fights. Source: vaporlens.app, worthplaying.com.
