How to get Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD running today
- Cap the frame rate below 100 FPS in the game launcher, since higher frame rates can leave the player and other characters stuck in place (PCGamingWiki).
- If the image looks zoomed in or parts of the screen are missing, set Override high DPI scaling behavior to Application on stranger.exe in its Compatibility properties (PCGamingWiki).
- If mouse movement or the character freezes, enable V-Sync and set an SSAA anti-aliasing mode in the launcher (Steam Community).
Synopsis
Stranger's Wrath is an action adventure set in the Oddworld universe, following a bounty hunter called Stranger who collects outlaws to pay for a mysterious operation. It switches between third person for running, climbing and brawling and first person for shooting, using a crossbow loaded with live critters as ammunition, each with its own effect. Outlaws can be brought in alive for a bigger reward or dead for less.

Reception
The 2005 original drew strong reviews for its live ammunition, its humor and its blend of shooting and platforming, though even then the slow camera drew complaints. The HD version holds an OpenCritic Top Critic Average of 73, with critics calling it charming and well aged while faulting clumsy controls, a sluggish camera and difficulty spikes. Players on Steam rate it Very Positive and praise the bounty hunting, but several recent comments call the combat dated and the PC port buggy at high frame rates.

Design today
3/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse movement in third person is floaty with uneven horizontal and vertical speed, critics called the controls clumsy, and only XInput controllers work, with generic prompts and a launcher that needs the mouse. - Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensVideo, control and language settings exist only in an external launcher rather than in the game, and high DPI displays can crop the image until a compatibility setting is changed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressA quicksave can be made at any moment alongside manual saves, which makes up for automatic checkpoints that can sit several minutes apart. Source: gamingnexus.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressThe game opens with a short training stretch that introduces most of the weapons and live ammo types used later. Source: worthplaying.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingBounties follow a clear loop of hunting an outlaw gang and its boss, and a mid-game twist changes how the game plays before the formula wears thin, though difficulty spikes around the halfway point. - Camera or movement fights the playerThe third person camera turns slowly, needs constant adjusting, and makes some boss attacks hard to see. Source: thesixthaxis.com, tech-gaming.com, worthplaying.com.
