Synopsis

Okami is an action adventure in which the sun goddess Amaterasu, in the form of a white wolf, sets out to restore a cursed land drawn from Japanese myth. The Celestial Brush lets the player paint strokes onto the world to cut enemies, bloom trees, summon wind and solve puzzles. A long journey through towns, fields and dungeons mixes combat, exploration and story scenes in an ink painting style.

Reception

Critics called it a classic at release and again for this remaster, with a Top Critic Average of 87 on OpenCritic and praise for the art style, music, writing and brush mechanic. The most common criticism is pacing: a very long opening, slow stretches of dialogue, a false ending and repeated boss fights. The PC version earned praise for mouse brush control and 4K support, while the locked 30 FPS disappointed some players. Players rate it Very Positive on Steam today.

Design today

3.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Drawing brush strokes with the mouse is quick and forgiving, and controllers are fully supported with remapping. Menus cannot be used with the mouse and need the keyboard or a controller. Source: animenewsnetwork.com, destructoid.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
The remaster supports widescreen, 4K and subtitles, with separate volume sliders for music, effects and voice. Button prompts can flicker between keyboard and controller when both are used. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Progress is saved manually into multiple slots, so players can keep a backup save before the point of no return near the end. Saves sync through Steam Cloud. Source: steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The companion Issun points out what to do next and shows each brush stroke on screen when the player struggles. Combat is forgiving, with plenty of healing items. Source: puredeadgaming.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The opening runs about 20 minutes of story before real control begins, and critics called the pace slow and stop-start. Later on, a false ending, repeated boss fights, a required digging minigame and long trips on foot drag the game out. Source: destructoid.com, puredeadgaming.com, animenewsnetwork.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The game is locked to 30 FPS because higher frame rates break its logic, and players find mouse camera movement odd at that rate. There is no field of view setting. Source: destructoid.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
