Synopsis

Penumbra: Requiem is an expansion to Penumbra: Black Plague that continues Philip's story after the main game's ending. It drops the enemies and most of the horror in favor of nine puzzle levels, where you drag, stack and throw physical objects to collect orbs and open the exit. It needs Black Plague to run.

Reception

Critics were mixed, and its PC Metascore of 67 sits well below Black Plague; reviewers found the physics puzzles decent but missed the horror, enemies and story, and many compared it to Portal. GamesRadar called it a few hours of fair puzzles that fall short of the game it adds to. Steam players hold it at Mixed from about 1,050 reviews, pointing to fiddly first-person platforming and puzzles that send some to a walkthrough.

  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Mouse and keyboard controls are remappable, and objects are moved by grabbing and dragging them with the mouse; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen support is limited: some resolutions are missing from the menu and the menus and HUD stretch when a widescreen resolution is set through the config file. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Quick save is enabled by default with remappable keys and an on-screen confirmation, so progress can be saved at any time. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Puzzles come with little context, and players report needing a video guide or walkthrough for sections such as the large water pit. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
With the enemies and story gone, the levels are a run of environmental puzzles, and timed jumping sections have to be executed just right or started over. Source: gamesradar.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Several levels rely on first-person platforming across ledges and moving objects, and players describe overjumping, falling and repeated attempts that made them nauseous. Source: steamcommunity.com.
