How to get Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh running today

  1. The Steam release runs the DOS version in DOSBox, which shows black scanlines over the videos; players recommend loading the game files in ScummVM to play the sharper Windows 95 version with scanlines optional, as described in this Steam thread.
  2. ScummVM is also the reported cure for stuttering cutscenes and audio in the DOSBox build (Steam thread).
  3. Keep several manual saves; if saves stop loading, copy the PS2G.00X files aside, delete P2SG.CAT and follow the restore steps in this Steam thread.

Synopsis

A full-motion video horror adventure from Sierra, played with live actors on filmed sets. You guide Curtis Craig, an office worker at a pharmaceutical company who is haunted by gruesome visions and blackouts, through five chapters of point-and-click exploration, conversations and inventory puzzles as his life falls apart.

Reception

Retrospective reviews are mixed: Gaming History 101 enjoyed the strange horror story and gory death scenes but found the point-and-click handling and inventory awkward enough to need a guide. Steam players rate it Very Positive, enjoying it as campy FMV horror and praising the cast. Common complaints are obscure puzzle logic, a final puzzle most players cannot solve without help, and occasional crashes and stutter in the DOSBox release.

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The point-and-click controls are loose and the inventory is awkward, with item combinations that are hard to discover, and players find locations confusingly laid out. Source: gaminghistory101.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
The Steam build runs the 640×480, 256-color DOS version, with black scanlines over the videos unless the player switches to ScummVM. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can save in many slots wherever they are, and continuing after a death returns the player to the scene just before the fatal mistake. Source: steamcommunity.com, gaminghistory101.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
There is no hint button, progress often stalls until an unmarked conversation or item is triggered, and players widely need a guide for the final puzzle. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, gaminghistory101.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The game is short, about six to eight hours by player accounts, and moves from scene to scene with little filler or grind. Source: steamcommunity.com, gaminghistory101.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Scenes are fixed, prefilmed screens with cinematic cutaways, so there is no camera for the player to manage. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gaminghistory101.com.
