Synopsis

RACE 07 is a SimBin racing simulation built around the 2006 and 2007 World Touring Car Championship seasons, with extra classes such as Formula BMW, Formula 3000, Caterham, Radical and Mini. Players set up single races, time attack runs, full or custom championships and online events, tuning their cars and racing against an aggressive field of AI drivers.

Reception

Critics in 2007 rated it highly for its force feedback, convincing AI and the freedom to race every car and track from the start, while noting that the aging engine brought few real changes over earlier SimBin games; the PC version holds a Metascore of 83. Reviewers also warned that it is a demanding simulation best played with a wheel. Players on Steam still rate it Very Positive and praise the handling, the aggressive AI and a large modding scene. Common complaints are the dated graphics and a steep learning curve for anyone expecting an arcade racer.

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game supports wheels with detailed force feedback profiles, gamepads with analog triggers and keyboard, with full remapping; recent players find it playable on a regular controller, though the menus still need a mouse. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamechronicles.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen resolutions are supported natively with a Silver widescreen rating, and the menus and HUD offer adjustable settings for what is shown during a race. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Races are self-contained events, and each custom or official championship keeps its own file between race weekends, so little progress is ever lost. Source: gamechronicles.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Practice mode is the way to learn tracks, car handling and setups, and GameChronicles calls it a hardcore simulation not meant for impatient drivers; neither review describes a tutorial or driving school. Source: gamechronicles.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Every car and track is available from the first session with no money, points or unlocks to grind, and race length and championship rules can be set freely. Source: gamingnexus.com, gamechronicles.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Players can pick from a working cockpit view, a raised action camera, a centered seat view, TV-style views and TrackIR head tracking, with adjustable field of view. Source: gamingnexus.com, gamechronicles.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
