How to get Railroad Tycoon 3 running today

  1. The Steam version crashes on startup on Windows Vista and newer. Copy the x86 D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll and DDraw.dll files from dgVoodoo 2 into the game folder, as described on PCGamingWiki and in this Steam discussion.
  2. Use F11 and F12 in game to cycle through resolutions the menu does not list, per PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

A railroad business simulation where you found a rail company, lay track across real regions and run trains that carry passengers and dozens of kinds of cargo. You also manage money, stock and rival companies while meeting the goals of each scenario. A campaign of historical scenarios spans from the earliest steam engines to modern electric trains, and a sandbox mode allows open-ended building.

Reception

Critics welcomed the new 3D engine, the deeper supply and demand economy and a strong, varied campaign, giving it a PC Metascore of 80, while noting blocky, low-detail terrain and a plain interface. Gaming Nexus found it easy to learn for a game of its scope. Players today rate it Mostly Positive on Steam, with 77 percent of about 1,170 reviews positive, though the Steam version needs a workaround to start on current Windows.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11

No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • Some content no longer works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
Online play relied on GameSpy, which is gone, so it now needs the community OpenSpy service (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen resolutions work, though the interface stretches (PCGamingWiki).
  • No full controller support and no remappable controls
There is no controller support (PCGamingWiki).
  • ?Not confirmed yetSteam Deck Verified or Playable
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
With its default setup the Steam version crashes on startup on Windows Vista and newer and needs the dgVoodoo 2 wrapper or an engine.cfg fix to launch (PCGamingWiki).

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game is played with the mouse, keys can be remapped, and the mouse wheel moves smoothly from a map view down to track level; there is no controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, worthplaying.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Widescreen resolutions stretch the interface and are partly hidden from the menu, and cutscenes and the campaign screen have no subtitles. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Players can keep as many numbered saves as they like, and the game also autosaves at an interval set in the gameplay settings, with campaign autosaves listed on the load campaign screen. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
A two-part tutorial covers running trains and handling money, which is enough for the easier difficulty levels. Source: gamingnexus.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Campaign scenarios vary their goals, from linking two cities to meeting haulage targets, with bronze, silver and gold medal tiers. Source: worthplaying.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The 3D camera zooms with one spin of the mouse wheel from a view of the whole network to a close trackside view. Source: worthplaying.com.
