How to get Rogue Trooper running today
- If the Hoppa chase mission stutters so badly that it cannot be finished, set RogueTrooper.exe (and steam.exe if needed) to Windows XP SP3 or SP2 compatibility mode for that mission, then turn it off afterward (PCGamingWiki, Steam Community).
- As a last resort, skip the Hoppa chase by editing the save file as PCGamingWiki describes, at the cost of that mission's salvage (PCGamingWiki).
Synopsis
Rogue Trooper is a third-person shooter based on the 2000 AD comic, set on the poisoned battlefield of Nu-Earth. Rogue, a genetically engineered soldier, hunts the traitor who wiped out his squad, carrying the personalities of three fallen comrades on biochips in his rifle, helmet and backpack. Levels mix cover-based gunfights and sniping with turret placement, crafting ammunition from salvage and holding positions while doors are hacked.
Reception
Critics in 2006 found it a solid, competent shooter, with a PC Metascore of 69: they liked the cover system, the biochip companions and the faithful comic setting, but called the levels rigidly linear and the scripted set pieces repetitive. The campaign runs about five hours, which felt short at full price. Steam players today rate it highly as a tight, varied mid-2000s shooter, while noting some jank and odd default mouse settings. The 2017 Redux remaster has largely replaced it as the version people recommend.

Design today
2.5/5- Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardMouse aiming has forced negative acceleration that cannot be turned off, players call the default controls and mouse sensitivity off, and there is no full controller support. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensWidescreen support is limited, and forcing wider resolutions makes menus such as the biochip screen oversized and partly off-screen. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamingpastime.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lostNo source describes how often the game saves or where checkpoints fall; PCGamingWiki records only the save folder, and one player reports that progress and the profile were not kept after quitting. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
- It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progressTutorial segments at the start introduce cover, turrets and the biochip tools, and later systems are optional rather than required. Source: gamingpastime.com, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingThe linear campaign lasts about five hours and moves between varied set pieces, although door-hacking defenses recur often. Source: bit-tech.net, steamcommunity.com, worthplaying.com.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe over-the-shoulder view runs above 60 fps, but vsync is always on, and players report sluggish, laggy mouse turning, blamed on forced vsync and negative acceleration, with no fix found. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
