Synopsis

Sins of a Solar Empire is a real-time strategy game that blends the empire building of a 4X game with real-time fleet battles across a star system. You colonize planets, research technology, trade and negotiate, and send fleets along phase lanes to take worlds from rival empires. Trinity collects the base game and its Entrenchment and Diplomacy expansions.

Trinity bundles the 2008 game with the Entrenchment and Diplomacy expansions, but Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion contains all of its gameplay content in a newer engine and is the better pick today.

Reception

Critics praised the original highly, with a PC Metascore of 87, singling out its accessible interface and the way it zooms from a single ship to a whole star system. Reviewers noted that it has no story campaign and that a single skirmish can run for hours. On Steam, Trinity holds a Mostly Positive rating from about 800 reviews. Players today mostly treat it as superseded by Rebellion and the 2024 sequel, and its internet multiplayer has been shut down.

Design today

5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Fleets are commanded with the mouse and remappable keys, abilities can be set to cast automatically, and production can be queued ahead of time. Source: studlife.com, gamingnexus.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Every button carries a tooltip, an empire tree lists all planets and fleets, and the game supports widescreen resolutions. Source: studlife.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Games can be saved at any time and resumed later, including multiplayer matches, so a session that runs for hours does not have to be finished in one sitting. Source: studlife.com, ign.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Tooltips on every control and automated structure placement make the systems easy to pick up, though the built-in tutorial is shallow and the Diplomacy layer adds screens that take time to learn. Source: studlife.com, gamingnexus.com, ign.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
Matches are long, often about an hour per player, but setup options and a faster game speed added in Diplomacy let players shorten them. Source: studlife.com, gamingnexus.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The camera zooms smoothly toward the cursor, from a view of the whole star system down to single fighters, so moving between planets is a quick zoom out and back in. Giving precise orders while zoomed all the way in is fiddly. Source: studlife.com, ign.com.
