How to get Star Trek: Starfleet Command Gold Edition running today

  1. Open sfc.ini in the game folder and, under the [Mouse] entry, set async to 0 and hwblit to 1 (PCGamingWiki).
  2. If missions still crash on entry, launch the game directly from sfc.exe in the install folder rather than through Steam, as players report on Steam Community.
  3. For resolutions above 800×600, apply the unofficial HD patch linked from PCGamingWiki.

Synopsis

A real-time starship combat game built on the Star Fleet Battles board game, where you captain a single ship or a small squadron for one of six empires. Battles revolve around routing power between shields, weapons and engines, and a campaign lets you earn prestige to buy, refit and crew better ships between missions.

Reception

Critics at release praised the depth of its ship systems and its faithful take on Star Fleet Battles, while warning about a thick, intimidating manual and a steep learning curve. Players today still call it one of the best ship-to-ship combat games in the Star Trek license and enjoy the slow, tactical feel. The Steam release sits at Mixed, mostly because many players hit crashes on modern Windows, and some find missiles badly overpowered. Dated 800×600 visuals and the lack of a native high-resolution option are frequent complaints.

Design today

1.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
The game has no controller support, and the player has to juggle helm, weapons, shields, transporters, security and communications through separate panels, which reviewers found easy to lose track of. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, technofile.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
Out of the box the game runs at a low 4:3 resolution such as 800×600, and higher or widescreen resolutions need an unofficial HD patch. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
Campaign progress is kept in save files between missions, but no source describes saving inside a battle, and players on Windows 10 report random crashes after loading into battle that throw away the engagement in progress. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Hard to make progress without a guide
Tutorial missions cover the basics, but the game leans on a thick manual, and players still describe a steep learning curve built on many separate ship functions. Source: technofile.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The campaign earns prestige points for better ships through a run of similar missions, and a most-helpful Steam review calls it undynamic unless the player takes on the optional special missions. Source: technofile.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
Battles use an external third-person view around the ship rather than a bridge view, which keeps nearby enemies and firing arcs in sight. Source: technofile.com.
