How to get Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D running today

  1. If the game freezes in the menu or cannot create a pilot profile, set ROGUE SQUADRON.EXE to Windows 98 / Windows ME compatibility mode, create the profile, then turn compatibility mode off if menus lag (PCGamingWiki).
  2. Install the Wingman mod by copying its dinput.dll into the game's ROGUE folder; it fixes the camera bug and high frame rate glitches.
  3. If keyboard controls stop responding because of a phantom joystick, press Ctrl+J to turn joystick input off (PCGamingWiki).

Synopsis

An arcade flight combat game set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, in which Luke Skywalker leads Rogue Squadron through nineteen missions on planets such as Tatooine, Hoth and Kessel. Each mission asks you to escort, defend or destroy targets in an X-wing, A-wing, Y-wing, snowspeeder or other craft, with medals for speed, accuracy and saving allies.

Reception

The game was well liked in 1998 for its fast missions, varied craft and strong Star Wars atmosphere. Reviews of the 2016 Steam release praised the mission design and medal challenges, but noted it is the unchanged 1998 PC version with no new features. Players still love it as a nostalgia piece, while many negative reviews cite a camera bug that leaves the ship flying off into the distance, joystick problems and crashes on modern Windows.

  • Sold or given away today by an official source
  • Needs fan patches to run well on Windows 11
  • ?Not confirmed yetSingle-player works without an internet connection
No source covers the current version yet, so this check counts as open, not passed. Played it lately? Tell us
  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The Steam release is the original single-player PC game with nothing removed (Cubed3).
  • No proper support for modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen needs a community DLL wrapper and the menus stay at 640×480 (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Controllers are supported with remapping, though full controller menu navigation is missing (PCGamingWiki).
  • Not Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
The official game never fixed the camera bug that loses the player's ship (only the Wingman mod does), and Steam threads report crashes at the end of the Taloraan mission and at mission opening cutscenes (Steam Community, Steam Community, Cubed3).

  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Keyboard and controllers both work but controller sensitivity cannot be adjusted, a phantom joystick can block keyboard input, and joystick detection problems are a recurring Steam forum topic. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, cubed3.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screens
There is no native widescreen or windowed mode, and even with a community wrapper the menus and hangar stay at 640×480. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Progress is kept in pilot profiles, and each beaten mission stays unlocked for replay, so a failure only costs the current short mission. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, cubed3.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
Objectives are briefed per mission and marked on the map, and the difficulty curve lets most players finish the campaign without outside help. Source: cubed3.com.
  • Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtracking
The campaign is a few hours of compact missions with no filler, and the medal hunts that unlock bonus stages are optional. Source: cubed3.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
The default chase camera regularly falls behind the ship until it vanishes into the distance, a bug that causes crashes into terrain unless the view is reset or a fan mod is installed. Source: cubed3.com, github.com.
