Synopsis

Viking: Battle for Asgard is a third-person action game from The Creative Assembly in which the warrior Skarin, chosen by the goddess Freya, fights the forces of Hel across three open islands. Players clear enemy camps, free captured Vikings to grow an army, buy new combat moves, and lead their warriors into large set-piece battles.

Reception

The game launched on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2008 to middling reviews, and the 2012 PC port fared about the same, with a PC Metascore of 65 from a handful of critics. Reviewers liked the huge battles but found the mission structure repetitive and the story thin, and they criticized the port for keeping a 30 FPS cap and the original textures. Recent Steam reviews are mostly positive, with players enjoying the army building and the large clashes out of nostalgia, while still calling the loop repetitive and the story predictable.

  • All of its content still works (servers, DLC, unlocks)
The game is single player only and nothing has been removed from the Steam release (PCGamingWiki).
  • Supports modern resolutions and widescreen
Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K are supported (PCGamingWiki).
  • Full controller support or remappable controls
Full controller support, with key remapping through the bundled config tool (PCGamingWiki).
  • Steam Deck Verified or Playable
  • No intrusive DRM or required third-party launcher account
  • No pay-to-win or pushy microtransactions
  • Known game-breaking bugs in the current version
Players have reported since 2020 that the game crashes after the cutscenes that end the first island, Darkwater, which blocks the story; one 2025 fix reinstalls DirectX files, but a 2026 report is still unsolved (Steam thread, Steam thread, Steam thread).

Design today

2.5/5
  • Controls feel awkward on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Gamepad play works, but players find the hero hard to control, and mouse aiming feels clunky under the 30 FPS cap unless the frame rate is forced steady with an outside tool. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions are supported, and subtitles are available. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
  • Saving is harsh: few saves or checkpoints, progress gets lost
There is no manual save; quitting returns players to the last checkpoint, and players complain about losing sections of play after a death. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The first island introduces almost every system the game uses, and the other two islands repeat that same structure. Source: gamingpastime.com.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
The same pattern of clearing camps and freeing prisoners repeats on all three islands, and leaving an island means any missed items are gone for good. Source: gamingpastime.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera or movement fights the player
Players report the camera drifting or spinning on its own and being far too sensitive with a controller, with threads from 2013 to 2026, and falls into pits during automatic movement are a common complaint. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com.
