Synopsis
Dark Crusade is a standalone expansion to the real-time strategy game Dawn of War, set on the planet Kronus. Any of seven factions can be played in a campaign where armies move across a turn-based planetary map and each attack on a province becomes a real-time battle of base building, capturing points and fielding squads.

Reception
Critics rated it highly at release, with a PC Metascore of 87, praising the conquest map, the seven playable factions and the value of a standalone package. Reviewers faulted uneven difficulty, with some battles brutal even on easy while scripted strongholds can be slow to grind down. On Steam it is Overwhelmingly Positive, and players still call it the high point of the original series, though some newer players struggle with the difficulty, the close camera and fixed key layout. It is no longer sold on its own on Steam and now comes only in the Anniversary Edition.

Design today
3/5- Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboardIt uses standard real-time strategy mouse controls, and most actions work with the mouse alone, but its hotkeys differ from other strategy games and cannot be remapped without outside software. - Menus, text or interface are hard to read on today's screensWidescreen is Vert- and the HUD stretches across wide screens unless a mod is installed. Source: pcgamingwiki.com.
- Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progressThe game can be saved and reloaded at any point, including in the middle of a battle. Source: steamcommunity.com.
- Hard to make progress without a guideDifficulty swings sharply between battles, with some brutal even on easy, and players regularly turn to the community for strategies to get through the campaign. Source: bobulous.org.uk, steamcommunity.com.
- Pacing holds up: little grind, filler or forced backtrackingMost campaign battles are fast skirmish matches against several opponents; only a few scripted stronghold battles slow into a grind. Source: matchstickeyes.com, bobulous.org.uk.
- Camera or movement fights the playerThe camera can zoom and rotate, but it stays close to the ground with a short zoom range and no field of view setting, and current players ask for a wider view. Source: steamcommunity.com, steamcommunity.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
