Synopsis

A 3D real-time strategy game set after a nuclear catastrophe, in which players command a small force called The Project as it rebuilds and battles rival factions across three campaigns. Instead of picking from fixed units, players research hundreds of technologies and combine bodies, propulsion types and weapons into their own vehicle designs, then use them in campaign missions, skirmishes and online matches for up to ten players.

Pumpkin Studios, Underdone Gaming
Released
1999
Best version
Play the free, open-source Warzone 2100 Project release that Steam distributes rather than the 1999 retail disc, because it adds modern resolutions, interface scaling, 64-bit builds and years of fixes.

Reception

Critics in 1999 rated it well, praising the unit design system, the deep research tree and the free 3D camera, with some noting a weak AI that favored tank rushes. Since the code was opened in 2004, a volunteer team has kept it updated, and recent reviews still call it unique and worth playing, though they criticize timed campaign missions, fiddly transport missions, repair center traffic jams and a late campaign that shifts into long-range artillery duels. Steam players rate it Very Positive, with complaints mostly about balance, the hard third campaign and the Steam build lagging behind the newest release.

Design today

4.5/5
  • Controls feel natural on a modern controller or mouse and keyboard
Standard RTS mouse controls come with full key remapping, though units still crowd into traffic jams around repair facilities. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, dazeland.com.
  • Menus, text and interface are clear on today's screens
Widescreen, ultrawide and 4K resolutions are supported, and display scaling added in version 3.3 keeps the interface readable on high-resolution screens. Source: pcgamingwiki.com, gamingonlinux.com.
  • Saving is fair: free saves or frequent checkpoints, little lost progress
Games can be saved and reloaded during missions, which reviewers rely on for the harsher late missions, and an autosave backs up progress. Source: wz2100.net, dazeland.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
  • It teaches itself: no guide needed to make progress
The official site sends new players to an in-game tutorial and a Quickstart Guide covering the basics; no review assessed how well the tutorial teaches. Source: wz2100.net.
  • Pacing drags: grind, filler or forced backtracking
Timed campaign missions punish slow build-ups, and from the second campaign onward fights shift to long-range artillery and VTOL exchanges that reviewers and players call frustrating. Source: gamingonlinux.com, dazeland.com, steamcommunity.com.
  • Camera and movement never fight the player
The 3D camera is easier to handle at the wider resolutions of the modern release than in the near ground-level original, though it now shows a lot of bright sky. Source: dazeland.com, pcgamingwiki.com.
